New year , New growing season 2021:

Hi everyone, so it is that time of year where we all get itchy feet and start to think about what the year will bring in the garden. I have looked at all the seeds I have to sow this year, although I must admit I forgot about some of my seeds that where in my seed box and aren't in these photos. I have sorted all the seeds I have and put them into which month from now February to May you can begin to sow them indoors. I am going to share this all with you and hopefully will help you if you are beginner and want to have a go at growing your own fruit or vegetables.

Firstly before you do anything make sure you know where you are going to grow your plants as they do take up more space that you think. they take a lot of TLC and care also and if you are anything like me who was very keen last year you will over sow and have far too many seedlings. But sharing is caring and I did get to give a lot of my extra plants away and it also helped me out when starting up the Nursery plot at my allotment.

So if you have got your seeds sorted now you can think about what you can now sow indoors.

Feburary :

In February you can sow Kale, Tomato (money makers) ,Dahlia, Broccoli, and Broad beans. Now this is with them being sown indoors on a windowsill or heated greenhouse. It is too cold to grow them outdoors just now well it definitely is where we live in Scotland. I will be doing a step by step guide when I am sowing seeds this year. For me we don't start sowing to March/April as we don't have a heated greenhouse, but that's not to say you cant have a go in February. If you have ago then let me know how you get.

March : What you can sow indoors in March :

In March you can start to sow herbs such as Sage, Chives and Parsley. You can sow Sunflower seeds, Chard, Lollo Rossa lettuce which if this is the first time you are growing it , it does grow as red lettuce. Last year I had a go at grown this and I didn't realise the leaves where red until I looked up the lettuce online. You can sow Spring onions in March , now here is a wee tip ,if you are growing for the first time don't sow all the seeds as you may end up with far too many seeds which means you end up with too may plant and have no where to put them. Lastly you can begin to sow peas in March , this is my first year having a go at sowing my own peas for the garden so I am excited to see how they grow. One thing I have learned is grow what you will eat as if you grow something you aren't going to eat it will only mean you end up growing it to be put in a compost bin which is a waste. It is so easy to be so excited and what to grow everything in sight. I did over grow last year and mainly because I didn't have any knowledge yet of growing flowers or fruit and vegetables. Don't get me wrong I learned loads but as much as I gave lots of plants away I was left with plants that well no one could take and ended up being left over. So this year I will be sowing less and seeds do last more than one season so you can reuse. One thing I wanted to do this year is collect the seeds that I get from the vegetables after the have set seed and my flowers if possible too.

Next we move on to April and what you can sow in April:

In April you can sow Tigerella Tomato seeds and Carrots. When growing carrots i was given this advice last year by a very experienced gardener that they can be attacked by carrot fly if planted directly into the ground , so if you make sure that your carrots are growing in a container or raised bed 3ft or above in height as they can not fly at this height and will hopefully save your crop. Another tip from the RHS is to grow them if they are growing in the ground by fleece which will stop the flies being able to get in to your plants. Last year was my first year growing carrots and I grew purple carrots in a bath. I was very happy with the carrots i grew last year for my first season but hoping for bigger ones to harvest this year so fingers crossed. Here are my carrots I grew :

Lastly I am going to finish this post with what you can sow in May:

I will be sowing my Pumpkin and Squashes in May. Lat year was my first year growing my own pumpkin and i managed to harvest One pumpkin for Halloween. Which I am over the moon with and so chuffed so it have given me the pumpkin growing bug. So i will be sowing tow different types of squash (Although a pumpkin is infact a squash.) i will be growing miniature pumpkins Jack be little and Baby boo and a larger variety Jack o Lantern. I have two squash varieties to grow Harlequinn and Crown prince. Now if you wish to grow pumpkins they do need quite a bit of space. Although i did grow mines in 40L trugs ,so they can be grown in larger containers. This year I am going to grow them in the back section of my allotment plot, to give them more space and hopefully i will get more of a harvest.
